Payload Sabot

Status: Complete
Picture

Summary

I developed multiple sabots that allowed square Cubesats to fly securely inside of IREC rockets for the RIT Launch Initiative, and to ensure they deploy safely away from parachutes.

Purpose

On the IREC rockets developed by the RIT Launch Initiative, the payload rides along at the top of the parachute bay. Once the rocket reaches apogee and the drogue parachute charge is activated, it will throw the sabot and parachute out.
The pieces of the sabot are attached to the rocket via shock cord, and fall away from the payload after leaving the rocket. The top of the sabot acts as a piston, moving the payload away before the parachute and shock cord can come out and potentially tangle it.
